Google Storage Full? How to Free Up Space in Google One

"Google storage full" means Gmail, Drive and Photos together have used your Google One quota (15 GB free). Open the storage manager at one.google.com/storage/management to see which service is full, empty Trash everywhere, delete large Gmail attachments and Drive files, then clear blurry photos, screenshots and duplicates in Google Photos before paying for more.

Why does Google One fill up so fast?

Google storage is one pool shared by Google Photos, Google Drive and Gmail. Phone cameras shoot large photos and 4K video, so a single trip can add gigabytes. Add years of screenshots, burst shots and photos that exist in both Photos and Drive, and the free 15 GB fills up even for people who don't think of themselves as heavy users.

Once you're over the limit, Google stops backing up photos, you can't add files to Drive, and Gmail can't send or receive. If you stay over quota for two years, Google says your content may be deleted. The storage manager shows a cleanup target, the amount you need to delete to get back under.

How do you fix Google storage full?

   Open the Google One storage manager

   Go to one.google.com/storage/management, or tap Manage storage in the Google Photos, Drive or Gmail app. It shows usage by service and cleanup suggestions such as large items and deleted items.

   Empty Trash in Photos, Drive and Gmail

   Google counts files left in Drive Trash and mail in Gmail Trash and Spam. Google Photos Trash deletes items after 30 days; Collections → Trash → More → Empty Trash gets the space back now.

   Clear large Gmail attachments

   In Gmail, search has:attachment larger:10M and delete old threads you don't need. Gmail shares the same 15 GB as Photos and Drive.

   Delete large files in Drive

   drive.google.com/drive/quota lists every file you own by size, largest first. Old video exports and backups usually sit at the top.

   Clean up Google Photos

   Photos settings → Backup → Manage storage lists blurry photos, screenshots and large videos to review. Then deal with duplicates: Google has no duplicate finder, so use photo stacks and search.

   Compress existing photos only as a last resort

   Google Photos can convert Original-quality photos to Storage saver. It can't be undone, so do it last, if at all.

Do you need to pay for Google One?

Not if a cleanup gets you comfortably under 15 GB. If it doesn't, Google One plans add storage shared across all three services; in the US, Google's help pages list 100 GB at $1.99 a month. The step most people skip: duplicates across Photos and Drive

Google Photos and Google Drive are separate products sharing one quota, and Google has never built a way to detect the same photo sitting in both. Cleaning up Google Photos (the biggest lever)

Start at Photos settings → Backup → Manage storage. Under your storage summary, Google lists categories to review, such as blurry photos, screenshots and large videos. Work through each one and bulk-delete. Be aggressive with screenshots in particular — most people have accumulated hundreds of app captures, error messages and receipts they will never open again. Cleaning up Google Drive

Go to drive.google.com/drive/quota. That view sorts every file you own by size, largest first, and it is the single most useful page in Drive. Old video exports, design files, and installers usually sit at the top and are trivial to delete or move to an external archive.

Then search for "Copy of" to find files created when a collaborator saved their own version, and sort by Last modified to surface anything untouched for over a year. Photos you uploaded directly to Drive — rather than through Photos backup — are a special case: they frequently duplicate content already in Google Photos, and neither product will flag it. Cleaning up Gmail

Gmail draws from the same quota and is the step most people skip. Search has:attachment larger:10M and a handful of old threads with video or design attachments can be worth gigabytes on their own. Then category:promotions older_than:1y and select-all-delete; promotional mail older than a year has no value and every message counts against your quota.

Unsubscribing matters more than it looks. Newsletters you no longer read keep arriving and keep accruing, so a cleanup without unsubscribing puts you back where you started within a year. Remember Gmail has its own Trash and Spam folders, and both count until emptied.
