Google Photos Storage Full? How to Fix It

When Google Photos says storage is full, empty the Trash first — deleted items hold your quota for 60 days. Then run Library → Utilities → Review and Delete, clear old screenshots, and remove duplicates that exist in both Photos and Drive. Compressing your existing library is the last step because it cannot be undone.

What "storage full" in Google Photos actually means

The quota is not a Google Photos quota. Photos, Drive and Gmail all draw on one Google account allowance, which starts at 15 GB on the free tier. When the combined total hits the limit, photo backup stops, new Drive files fail to save, and incoming Gmail can bounce. Nothing you have already backed up is deleted.

That shared quota is why cleaning up Photos alone sometimes feels like it did nothing: if the space is going to Gmail attachments, deleting photos moves the needle slowly. Fix it in this order

The order matters more than the individual steps. Reversible actions come first, irreversible ones last, so you can stop as soon as you are back under the limit without having permanently altered anything.

How to fix Google Photos storage full, step by step

   Empty the Trash in Photos and Drive

   Deleted items hold your quota for 60 days. Library → Trash → Empty Trash in Google Photos, and Trash → Empty Trash in Drive. Nothing else you do frees space faster.

   Run Review and Delete

   Library → Utilities → Review and Delete surfaces blurry photos, screenshots older than a year, large videos, and burst shots Google has already flagged. Bulk-select and clear.

   Clear old screenshots

   Search 'screenshots' in Google Photos to open the auto-generated category, then select by date range. Screenshots are the category people regret keeping least.

   Delete duplicates across Photos and Drive

   Google has no duplicate finder, and a photo that exists in both Photos and Drive is stored twice. A perceptual-hash tool scans both services in one pass and groups the copies.

   Cap future video uploads

   Settings → Back up & sync → Upload size → Storage saver. New photos and videos are compressed on upload. This does not touch what you have already stored.

   Compress the existing library (last resort)

   photos.google.com/settings → Recover storage converts already-uploaded originals to Storage Saver quality. It frees a lot and it is irreversible, so do it only after the reversible steps.

The step almost everyone skips

Duplicates. Google Photos will not back up a byte-identical file twice, but any edit, crop, re-compression or WhatsApp round-trip produces a new file it treats as unique — and there is no feature anywhere in the product that finds those copies afterwards. The worst version is cross-service. A photo you uploaded to Drive to share, which is also backed up through Photos, occupies space twice on a quota you pay for once. Storage Saver and Recover storage, explained

These are two different settings that people frequently confuse. Storage Saver is forward-looking: it compresses photos and videos as they upload from now on, and leaves your existing library alone. Turning it on costs you nothing today but slows how fast the quota fills from here.

Recover storage is retroactive: it re-compresses originals you have already uploaded, replacing them. It frees a substantial amount on an original-quality library and it cannot be undone — the originals are gone once it completes. Run every reversible step first, and only reach for it if you still need space. What it is not is the "Free up space" option, which only deletes local copies from your phone and changes your cloud usage by nothing at all.

If the phone is full rather than the cloud

Two different warnings get read as the same problem.
